Your air conditioning plays a crucial role in keeping your home or workplace cool and comfortable during the hottest months, or warm during the winter. However, like any appliance, it won’t last forever. Eventually, repairs become less effective, and keeping an outdated system running can cost more in the long run. Recognizing the signs that it’s time for a replacement can help you avoid high energy bills and unexpected breakdowns. Here’s how to know when it’s time to upgrade to a new AC system... 1. Your AC is more than 10-15 years old Most air conditioners last between 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. If your unit is approaching or has surpassed this age, it may not be as efficient as newer models. Older systems also tend to require more frequent repairs, making replacement a smarter financial choice. 2. Frequent and costly repairs Are you calling the engineer more often than before? If your AC needs frequent repairs, those costs can add up quickly. Instead of pouring money into an aging system, investing in a new unit can provide better efficiency and reliability. 3. Rising energy bills A sudden spike in your energy bill could mean your AC is working harder than it should to cool your home. As air conditioners age, they lose efficiency, leading to higher electricity consumption. A newer, energy-efficient model can help reduce your utility costs. 4. Uneven cooling or weak airflow If some rooms in your house are too hot while others are too cold, or if the airflow feels weak, your AC might not be functioning properly. This could be due to failing components or an overall decline in performance. 5. Strange odours or noises Loud noises like grinding, banging, or squealing are signs of a struggling AC unit. Similarly, musty or burning smells can indicate mold, electrical issues, or internal damage. These are clear signs that your system may need replacing. 6. Excessive humidity A properly functioning AC not only cools your home but also helps control humidity. If your home feels damp, sticky, or has excessive moisture buildup, your unit may not be operating efficiently. 7. Refrigerant leaks If your AC is leaking refrigerant, it may be a serious issue, especially in older models that use outdated refrigerants like R-22 (which is being phased out). Instead of repairing a refrigerant leak, replacing your AC with a modern system may be a better long-term solution. 8. Poor indoor air quality Your AC plays a crucial role in filtering dust, allergens, and pollutants from the air. If you’re noticing more dust accumulation, worsening allergy symptoms, or stale indoor air, your system may not be effectively filtering the air anymore. Replacing your air conditioner is a big investment, but waiting too long can lead to higher costs, reduced comfort, and unexpected breakdowns. If you’re experiencing any of these signs, it might be time to explore newer, energy-efficient options that can keep your home cool while lowering your energy bills. WHY GOOD AIR CONDITIONING IS ESSENTIAL FOR EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY
By Giuliana Kinnerly January 20, 2025
When it comes to creating a productive work environment, the role of air conditioning often goes unnoticed. However, maintaining a comfortable indoor climate is more than just a luxury—it’s a business necessity. Research has shown that employees perform better, focus longer, and experience improved well-being in a well-cooled environment. Here’s why proper air conditioning is essential for boosting employee productivity and how it benefits businesses. 1. Optimum temperature promotes focus Temperature has a direct impact on cognitive performance. Studies have found that the ideal indoor temperature for productivity lies between 68°F and 76°F (20°C and 24°C) . Temperatures outside this range can lead to discomfort, distractions, and reduced focus. • Too Hot: Excessive heat can cause fatigue, irritability, and even physical symptoms like dehydration or headaches, leaving employees unable to focus on tasks. • Too Cold: On the other hand, overly cold environments can lead to discomfort and frequent breaks to warm up. Maintaining an optimal temperature allows employees to concentrate fully on their work, improving overall efficiency. 2. Enhances employee morale and comfort Uncomfortable employees are unhappy employees. When the office climate is too hot or stuffy, frustration and dissatisfaction can quickly set in, leading to decreased morale. A comfortable workspace shows employees that their needs are valued, creating a positive work atmosphere. Employees who feel cared for are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and loyal to the company—factors that directly contribute to improved productivity. 3. Prevents fatigue and physical strain Working in a poorly ventilated or overly warm environment can lead to physical exhaustion, even during simple tasks. Excessive heat forces the body to work harder to regulate its internal temperature, which can result in: • Increased heart rate • Dehydration • Reduced alertness Proper air conditioning eliminates these stressors, allowing employees to maintain their energy levels throughout the day. 4. Supports technology and equipment In today’s digital-driven workplaces, technology plays a crucial role. Overheated environments can negatively impact computers, servers, and other equipment by causing them to overheat or malfunction. A well-maintained air conditioning system not only keeps employees comfortable but also ensures that essential office equipment operates efficiently, preventing downtime and costly repairs. 5. Reduces sick days Modern air conditioning systems are designed to improve indoor air quality by filtering out dust, allergens, and pollutants. Cleaner air means fewer respiratory issues, allergies, or illnesses among employees, leading to fewer sick days and a healthier workforce. By investing in an AC system that prioritizes air filtration, businesses can reduce the spread of airborne illnesses, particularly in shared office spaces. 6. Boosts team collaboration and creativity In an uncomfortable environment, employees are less likely to collaborate effectively. Sweating through brainstorming sessions or meetings can sap creative energy and make team discussions less productive. Comfortable air conditioning fosters an environment where employees feel relaxed and energized, encouraging collaboration and innovation. 7. Tips for maintaining good air conditioning in the workplace Regular Maintenance: Schedule routine maintenance to ensure the system is functioning efficiently and doesn’t disrupt daily operations. • Zoning Systems: Use zoned air conditioning to cater to different temperature preferences in various office If you are looking to get air conditioning in your workplace, get in touch today for your FREE, no obligation quote. As the UK dips in and out of some serious heat waves this summer, and most people don't have the luxury of owning air conditioning in their home or office, we wanted to share some top tips to help keep you cool and safe in the heat... 1. Stay shaded Avoid being outside in the direct sun if possible (especially with young kids and animals) and keep indoors or in the shade where you can. 2. Stay hydrated It's simple but SO important - water, soft drinks, lollies keep you hydrated and cool you down. 3. Block out the sun Keep blinds or curtains closed as much as you can to help keep the room cool and only open the window when the temperature drops. If it's really hot outside then opening the window will only let the warm air in. 4. Dress accordingly Too many layers will make you feel even hotter. Wear light colours made from breathable, cotton material. 5. Have a quick dip Have a nice luke warm bath or shower before bed as it will help the body cool down naturally allowing you to sleep more comfortably. Having a paddling pool in the garden or quick dip in a cool shower will also cool you down throughout the day. 6. Invest in a decent fan There are many different types of fans out that will help cool you down and keep air moving round the room. You can also place it by an open window facing out to direct the warm air out of the window. 7. If you have a baby... DO NOT place muslins or blankets over prams. This is such a common thing to do and yet SO DANGEROUS! Instead of keeping your baby cool and shaded, this will actually create a greenhouse effect and build up dangerous levels of heat inside the pram. Instead, use a clip on parasol/ sunshade with open sides to allow ventilation throughout. Always be checking on baby and in temperatures over 26 degrees aim to keep any time outside in the pram to a minimum. If you have a young baby, place a thin muslin between you and baby's skin when holding, cuddling or feeding to prevent overheating. This will keep you both cool and comfortable. 8.
